To drive on Hungarian freeways and expressways marked with an "M", electronic vignettes are required for all vehicles up to 3.5t GVW, which are automatically checked via the license plate. Vehicles over 3.5t GVW are subject to the distance-based toll (HU-GO system) and cannot use a vignette.
A distinction is made between four vehicle classes (D1M, D1, D2, U).
Cars with more than 7 seats fall under vehicle class D2 and are subject to a higher toll than cars with up to 7 seats (vehicle class D1).
In the case of combinations with a towing vehicle that falls under vehicle category D2, trailers are subject to additional tolls. Trailers up to 3.5t GVW are then classified in category U. In the case of combinations with a towing vehicle that falls under vehicle category D1, trailers are not additionally tolled.
Motorhomes up to 3.5 t GVW can be classified in vehicle category D1 as well as in vehicle category D2. Motorhomes are assigned to vehicle category D1 if they are registered for the transportation of up to 7 persons and as a vehicle for the transportation of persons (M1). Motorhomes are assigned to vehicle category D2 if they are registered to carry more than 7 people or as a commercial vehicle (N1).
Motorcycles also require a vignette of class D1M (weekly and monthly vignette) or D1 (annual vignette), depending on the period of validity.

The fines are currently for cars, motorcycles and motor homes under 3.5 tons GVW. at about 50 €. For buses, the penalty is about 215 €. If caught drivers do not comply with a deadline of 60 days, the fines to be paid increase. The fee for the roads is collected by the Hungarian Motorway Collection Ltd.
