Before setting off on your trip to Hungary, you should be aware that tolls in Hungary are collected either via a vignette or distance-based toll system. To avoid penalties, it’s crucial to understand who is subject to the vignette requirement and who must pay the distance-based toll.
You purchased a vignette but still received a fine and wonder how that’s possible? We have the answer and may help you avoid paying the penalty.
It’s important to verify the vehicle category before purchasing a digital vignette. Otherwise, additional fees may apply even if a vignette has been purchased. We recommend carrying the proof of purchase (control slip) with you during your trip. Here are some common reasons why fines may occur despite owning a vignette:
In Hungary, vignettes are required for passenger cars, trailers, and motorhomes up to 3.5 tons gross weight. The so-called e-Matrica (Hungarian e-vignette) is verified electronically via the license plate. If you drive on a toll road without a valid vignette, you will be fined.
More details about vehicle categories and the duration of the digital vignette can be found in our guide.
If your vehicle weighs over 3.5 tons, you must pay a distance-based toll. This applies to motorhomes, buses, and trucks, which since January 2024 are required to pay electronically via the HU-GO system. In this case, the vignette is no longer required.
To avoid penalties, we recommend checking which roads require a vignette or distance-based toll. Use our route planner and map on the homepage to get an overview of toll roads.
We also advise you to keep all receipts for your digital vignette during your trip. Proof of a valid vignette can be shown using the control slip. If you no longer have this document, request a copy.
If you drive in Hungary without a vignette or provide incorrect information (wrong license plate or country code), you may be fined 16,200 HUF (approx. €40). Video surveillance on toll roads ensures that you will be detected and fined.
If the fine is not paid within 60 days, the amount increases to 64,850 HUF (approx. €162).
It's crucial to know your vehicle’s correct classification before buying a vignette. Otherwise, you may still be charged extra. Reasons for additional fees despite owning a vignette include:
The fine for driving without a valid vignette is much higher than simply purchasing one. If you buy your vignette and verify all data, you’ll be on the safe side. Even if you plan to avoid toll roads, construction or new routes might force you onto toll roads unexpectedly. For a stress-free trip without fines, we highly recommend buying a vignette for Hungary.
