Although Hungary is not particularly known for its ski resorts and many winter sports enthusiasts head to Austria or Italy, you should not miss the ski regions in Hungary! The various ski resorts are especially perfect for beginners and families. While the skiing fun does not take place in high alpine mountains, the small ski regions with their slopes in Hungary are ideal for newcomers.
This ski resort is located in the Mátra Mountains, northeast of Budapest. This makes it easy to combine your ski stay with a trip to Budapest. The Hungarian capital is only about 110 km from the ski resort, so it takes no more than two hours by car to reach the capital. The ski region is located at an altitude between 674 and 822 m and offers 10 slopes with a total length of 4.3 km. The ski season begins at the end of December and ends at the end of March.
The ski resort is not only suitable for beginners but also appealing to advanced skiers. In this snow paradise, you can explore both blue and red runs and discover the snow park. The snow park is particularly interesting for action-loving snowboarders who are looking for an extra adrenaline kick. There is also the possibility of night skiing. For the little ones in your family, the children’s area is perfect, including magic carpets and a practice slope. You can also refresh your skills at the local ski school.
Besides a new skiing adventure, there are other activities to enjoy in this ski resort, including winter tobogganing or winter hiking as well as snowshoeing. You can also take a break from the cold season and relax in one of the thermal baths.
This ski resort is also located in the Mátra Mountains in northern Hungary. The highest point of the ski region is at 1,014 m, on Hungary’s highest mountain. The nearest town is only a few kilometers away and can easily be reached by car. The town of Gyöngyös lies at the foot of the Mátra Mountains and impresses with its baroque appearance. The capital of the country is also not far from the Kékestető ski resort. You can reach Budapest within two hours or explore the city.
The ski season usually runs from the end of December to the end of February, as this ski resort does not have artificial snowmaking. Therefore, you should check the current weather conditions before your trip. Sometimes the ski season can last longer or shorter. There are only two slopes, but the resort impresses visitors with its natural environment and winter charm.
Although the ski resort is small, it offers a wonderful opportunity for a skiing adventure. You can either use the long run, which is classified as intermediate, or the shorter, flatter run, which is perfect for beginners. Night skiing is not available in this ski resort.
Even though there are no official toboggan runs, you can still go tobogganing in this ski region. The same applies to snowshoeing. There are no guided tours, but in good weather conditions you can use the usual hiking trails. However, you must bring your own equipment. This ski region in the Mátra Mountains is especially worthwhile for hiking enthusiasts. Follow the 3 km hiking route from Kékestető to Mátraháza and enjoy an impressive view of the mountains. You should also visit the panoramic tower at the summit and take in the winter landscape.
The Visegrád ski resort is located in the Danube Bend in northern Hungary and is much closer to the country’s capital. Budapest is only 45 km away from the ski resort, making it easy to combine a city trip with your skiing adventure. The small ski region is located at around 325 to 378 m. Visegrád is perfect for beginners and can also be used for a day trip. So if you travel to Budapest in winter and would like to explore the mountains, you can easily plan a short ski stay in Visegrád. In total, there are six slopes. The ski season runs from the end of December to the beginning of March.
The six slopes are mainly suitable for beginners and families with younger children. The difficulty levels range from easy to intermediate. Therefore, this ski resort is less recommended for professional skiers and snowboarders. There is also a practice slope for beginners and a ski school that can teach you the basics.
Off the slopes, you can go tobogganing and use the official toboggan run for some family fun. You can also enjoy winter hikes with impressive views. Not far away is the famous Visegrád Castle, a medieval ruin overlooking the Danube. The Royal Palace of Visegrád is also worth a visit.
The Dobogókő ski resort is located in the Pilis Mountains and is also not far from Budapest. To get from the ski resort to the capital, you only need to travel 40 km. This allows you to combine your ski holiday with a city trip. The ski region is situated at around 699 m, at the highest point of the Pilis Mountains. Dobogókő is considered the oldest ski resort in Hungary and opens from January to the end of February. It offers easy to intermediate slopes.
The ski resort is very suitable for families and beginners. In Dobogókő, you can use two slopes and also test your skiing skills on the practice slope. There is also a ski school that is perfect for beginners to learn the basics for future snow adventures. The slopes are blue and red, making the resort less interesting for professional skiers, but all the quieter for beginners. Night skiing is not possible in this resort, and you should note that there is no artificial snowmaking. Therefore, you should check in advance whether the resort is currently open.
You can also try tobogganing in Dobogókő or go winter hiking through the Pilis Mountains. The Thirring Rock Route and the trail to the Ferenc Rock are particularly popular. As in the Kékestető ski resort, you can go snowshoeing. However, note that there are no guided tours, but in good weather you can use the usual hiking trails. Remember that you must bring your own equipment.
This ski resort is located in Veszprém County in northern Hungary. Be enchanted by this winter sports area at an altitude of 333 to 509 m and discover a total of 7.7 km of slopes. This ski region is considered one of the most modern winter sports facilities in the country and is open from early December to late March. A special advantage: Eplény has artificial snowmaking, making the ski season significantly longer than in Dobogókő or Kékestető.
The various runs allow you to explore easy, intermediate, and challenging slopes, offering something for every level. You can also attend a ski school to refresh your skills. Be impressed by the snowboard park, which features halfpipes and jumps for excitement. In addition, you can also participate in night skiing in this ski region.
Off the slopes, you can explore nature on winter hikes or snowshoe hikes. Even though there are no official snowshoe tours, it is certainly possible in this area. It is best to bring your own equipment. If you don’t have any, check with a rental shop before your trip to see if they have any available. If you want to enjoy the view without a long winter hike, you can get a unique panoramic view from the mountain lift (Ámos-hegyi lift). You can also go sledding or tobogganing here, even though there are no official runs – simply use flat areas for toboggan fun.
