Hungarian highways and the express roads marked with an "M" require a vignette. The type of vignette depends on the validity period, the number of seats, and the different vehicle classes. To help you know which vignette you need, we explain in this article, among other things, which vehicle class you should choose.
There are five vehicle classes in total. These are D1M, D1, D2, B2, and U.
A vignette is valid only for vehicles under 3.5 tons zGG. All vehicles heavier than this must register in the HU-Go system, and the payment will be processed automatically. The associated device (OBU) will automatically detect the distance traveled.
If a caravan has a towing vehicle classified under D2, the trailer is charged separately. These are then classified under vehicle class U. If the towing vehicle is classified under D1, trailers are not subject to an additional fee.
Motorhomes up to 3.5 tons zGG can be classified either under vehicle class D1 or D2. Motorhomes are classified under D1 if they are authorized for the transport of up to 7 passengers and as a vehicle for passenger transport (M1). They are classified under D2 if they are authorized for the transport of more than 7 passengers or as a utility vehicle (N1).
Since January 2024, for motorhomes and other vehicles over 3.5 tons, a distance-dependent electronic toll collection system via the HU-GO system applies. This means you no longer need a vignette but must register in the HU-GO system, set up a credit balance, and purchase an OBU (on-board unit). The automatically recorded distance is then paid for using the credit balance.
If you want to purchase a vignette for a motorcycle, there is one thing to keep in mind. If you buy a weekly or monthly vignette, it will fall under class D1M. However, for an annual vignette, it falls under class D1.
In Hungary, there are no adhesive vignettes that you can stick to your windshield. The vignette can only be purchased online.
It is also important to know that only with the annual vignette is there an option to buy a vignette for individual counties (states). Otherwise, the digital vignette is valid throughout Hungary and on all highways.

Once you have received the registration confirmation, you can start your trip right away. However, we recommend that you carry the registration confirmation with you during your trip.
