The following section provides an overview of whether you need a vignette and if there are any specific toll sections in Hungary.
In Hungary, there is a vignette requirement for cars, caravans, and motorhomes. This is the so-called e-Matrica (Hungarian vignette), which checks the toll electronically via the license plate. You should purchase the e-vignette online before your trip, as a fine is imposed if you drive on a toll road without an e-vignette.
Depending on the vehicle class, your vehicle will be tolled at different rates. For example, cars with more than 7 seats are tolled at a higher rate than cars with fewer than 7 seats. Further information on the different vehicle classes can be found here:
Within the different vehicle classes, you can choose from various durations. If you're unsure about your vehicle class, find more detailed information here.
The toll by distance applies if your vehicle exceeds 3.5 t gross vehicle weight. This means that motorhomes, buses, and trucks must pay a distance-dependent toll, which is calculated via the HU-GO system (electronic toll collection). Therefore, the distance-based toll replaces the vignette, and you no longer need a vignette.
The following section provides an overview of whether you need a vignette in Croatia and if there are specific toll sections.
Since there is no vignette requirement in Croatia, the toll depends on the kilometers driven on the highways as well as the vehicle class. Therefore, when traveling to Croatia, you must pay the toll based on the distance traveled. You can pay the toll at toll stations located along the highways. Sometimes, you will receive a ticket at the beginning of the toll section, which must be paid when leaving the section. This ticket can be paid with cash, credit, or bank cards. Additionally, cashless payments are possible through the Croatian Electronic Toll Collect System (ETC). However, the transponder for this system must be installed in your vehicle for the toll calculation to take place.
Furthermore, for 2026, the implementation of a digital toll system with an e-vignette or toll box for barrier-free payment is planned.
